State's unemployment rate remains at 5 percent in March 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's unemployment rate has dropped to 4.3 percent, its lowest in 16 years.

Minnesota's unemployment rate improved to a seasonally adjusted 3.8 percent in March. Last month's jobless rate in MI was two-tenths of a percentage point higher than the state's year-ago rate of 4.9 percent.

Over the past year, the state has gained 48,162 jobs, a growth rate of 1.7 percent, compared to a United States growth rate of 1.5 percent in that time. "Strong job growth has pushed the unemployment rate down further as more workers find jobs". The unemployment rate at this time previous year was 4.9 percent. An increase in durable manufacturing employment of 3,000 positions was partially offset by a 200-job decline in nondurable goods.

While the low unemployment rate is good for workers' paychecks, it's harder on the employers. With 26,700 more people employed and 7,900 more unemployed, the labor force increased by 34,500 people from February.

Gould also refuted Trump's assertion that he could enact policies that will see the American economy add 25 million new jobs over the next 10 years.
