Earthquake kills eight in western China report

A 5.5 magnitude quake jolted northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, killing eight people and injuring 11 others.

Eight people were killed and 11 others injured today after a 5.4-magnitude quake rocked China's western Xinjiang region.

The remote area is close to Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The natural disaster has affected more than 12,000 people, and about 9,200 people have been evacuated to safety, Xinhua news agency reported.

Major damage was reported due to the proximity of the earthquake's epicentre to highly populated areas and the shallow focal depth of the quake.
