At least 10 people are feared to have drowned in the Zuari river at Sanvordem, 60km from Panaji, after a 30-metre span of a steel footbridge adjacent to an old bridge collapsed on Thursday evening.

The incident took place when a youth, who had jumped into the river to commit suicide was being rescued by the fire and emergency service personnel, a police official said. Two people died and 12 were injured as the crowd fell into the Sanvordem river, police said.

The bridge, dating back to the Portuguese era, has been closed to traffic since the last 4 years. "People were warned not to use the bridge". The rescue operation is underway. "However, we do not have the exact number of people present on the bridge when it collapsed", Parrikar told reporters here.
