If one were making a list of players the Braves just can't lose to an injury this season, Freddie Freeman would be listed first.

Manager Brian Snitker said afterward that initial X-rays on Freeman's wrist were "inconclusive". A team spokesman said it could be late afternoon before the results are known.

"When the best hitter in the game goes out and he's on our team, it really sucks", said Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz, who got the win Wednesday. If the wrist is fractured, he could be out of the lineup for a couple months.

Freeman leads the National League in home runs (14) and his slash line (.341/.461/.748) puts him among the league leaders in all three categories. "But like I said, we'll know more [Thursday]".

The Braves have had to rely on their offense most of the season since their pitching has often failed them and Freeman has been at the center of that attack. He said veteran first baseman Ryan Howard, who was released from Triple-A Gwinnett on May 8, is not an option.

Jace Peterson will start at first base Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays and bat sixth.

A chastened McCluskey, whose union's support and money has been key in propping up Corbyn, issued a statement on Wednesday claiming his words to Politico were taken out of context.

Freeman said he feared he suffered a fracture when first examined by trainer Jim Lovell on the field and Lovell "told me to squeeze his hand and obviously I couldn't do it".

"I'm not going out there to do what Freddie Freeman does", Peterson said. "I'm not going out there to do what Freddie Freeman does".

The Braves recalled infielder Rio Ruiz from Triple-A Gwinnett to start at third base against the Blue Jays on Thursday night. The Braves said those tests showed the fracture. "I don't think that's possible".

Ruiz, 22, played in five games with Atlanta last season.

Johan Camargo came in as a pinch runner and stayed in the game at third base. The Braves hoped offseason addition Sean Rodriguez would have been the fill-in for Freeman this season, but Rodriguez may miss the full season with a shoulder injury sustained when a vehicle he was driving was rammed by a stolen police auto in Miami on January 28.

No surgery will be required. The team placed third baseman Adonis Garcia on the disabled list with Achilles tendinitis before Wednesday's game.
