Fearing harassment, a group of female students of a government high school in Haryana's Rewari went on a hunger strike for five consecutive days, demanding upgradation of their school. The girls had alleged that boys harass them on their way to school at the neighbouring village where they have taken admission in class XI and XII.
Joint Secretary (Education) also wrote to the Director of Secondary Education that the Haryana Governor has accorded to upgrade the Gothara Tappa Dahina high school to senior secondary level with effect from 2017-18 session.
More than 80 girls of Rewari's Gothra Tappa Dahina village were sitting on a hunger strike since May 10 demanding upgradation of their village high school to senior secondary school, alleging that the senior secondary school that they are in, is about 3 km away in another village and they face harassment on the way to their school from local boys.
According to a senior BJP leader, the government, based on the feedback from its trouble-shooters, hoped that the girls and villagers will get exhausted and call off the strike.
The girls said they had complained to the sarpanch, who took up the matter with the authorities, but to no avail, so they had to resort to a hunger strike. But when these students went on the strike, their families and villagers were more than willing to support them.
Several political leaders had even joined the girls in their protest.
