Joe Lieberman is top contender for new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

The Washington Post is reporting that a current senior White House adviser is under scrutiny as part of an investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. He also disputed the administration's characterization of an investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump White House.

Several senior White House officials told reporters at both Politico and CNN that Lieberman, a former Democratic senator from CT who now identifies as an Independent, was the frontrunner for the job.

McCabe is the current acting FBI director and came to the defense of ousted FBI director James Comey by disagreeing with the White House's claim the latter had lost the support of the bureau.

Trump reportedly hopes to make an announcement before Friday when he leaves for his first foreign trip. Joe Lieberman was among his top choices.

Lieberman is not named as an attorney on any of the Trump-related cases that Kasowitz has taken on, and as senior counsel at the firm has mostly seemed to serve a marketing role, hosting a "conversation and cocktails" evening, and speaking at public events.

But Trump criticized McCabe on the campaign trail past year for not recusing himself from the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

He endorsed John McCain for president during the 2008 Republican National Convention and was listed in Senate records as an "Independent Democrat" as of 2007. He lost to a Senate primary challenger in 2006 and only retained his seat after he switched his party to independent. He has served as co-chairman of No Labels, a centrist group that promotes bipartisanship.

Keating, a Republican, was a two-term governor of Oklahoma and led the state during the deadly 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City.

South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy was considered a heavy favorite among Trump's base, but withdrew from consideration, saying he's not the right person for the job. John Cornyn and New York Judge Michael Garcia, who both withdrew their names.
