Kelly Calls Maintaining Communication Channels With Russia 'a Good Thing'

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that a legal team may review Trump's tweets before they are sent out, while the New York Times said the president has been urged by staff to stop tweeting.

The FBI, in the course of its investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election, is now also looking at Kushner's multiple roles in Trump's campaign operation and his contacts with Russian officials.

Trump s National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster refused to talk about the allegations, but said that generally speaking, "we have back-channel communication with a number of countries".

"Any channel of communication, back or otherwise, with a country like Russian Federation is a good thing", Kelly said.

Kushner discussed setting up a secret and secure communications channel between Trump's transition team and Russian diplomats to shield pre-inaugural discussion from monitoring, according to a report published Friday by The Washington Post and later confirmed by the Associated Press.

As the expanding Russian Federation investigation hits closer to a home on Jared Kushner, Kelly said the top White House adviser was only looking out for the US.

The talks between Kushner and the Russians, if confirmed, raise new questions about the Trump team s relationship with Moscow, which USA intelligence agencies say tried to sway the November election in Trump s favor.

The Post wrote that Kislyak was reportedly taken aback by the suggestion of allowing an American to use Russian communications gear at its embassy or consulate - a proposal that would have carried security risks for Moscow as well as the Trump team. But officials said that it's unclear what Kislyak would have had to gain by falsely characterizing his contacts with Kushner to Moscow, particularly at a time when the Kremlin still saw the prospect of dramatically improved relations with Trump.

Kushner boasts an enormous portfolio of domestic and global responsibilities, underscoring his importance as Trump s chief adviser despite having no experience in politics before the 2016 White House race. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recently appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to head the Russian Federation investigation as a special counsel. Kushner's attorney, Jamie Gorelick, told Reuters that Kushner "has no recollection of the calls as described".

As a result of the sense of crisis enveloping the Oval Office, Trump is said to be weighing changes at the uppermost ranks of the White House.

Schiff declined to discuss the substance of the allegations regarding Kushner's contact with Russian officials during the transition and whether Kushner had been forthcoming about them, but said enough questions had been raised that his access to top-secret intelligence should be scrutinized. Citing three people with knowledge of Kushner's discussion with Kislyak, the newspaper said that Flynn, a retired army lieutenant general, was supposed to communicate directly with a senior Russian military official as part of the plan to discuss the war in Syria and other issues. Caveat: The FBI has accused Mr Kushner of no wrongdoing, and he is not its main focus.

Kushner was a trusted Trump adviser past year, overseeing the campaign's digital strategy.

The White House did not acknowledge the meeting or Mr. Kushner's attendance until March.

According to Reuters Mr Kushner also met Sergei Nikolaevich Gorkov, the head of Russian state-owned bank Vnesheconombank and a trained intelligence officer appointed by Vladimir Purin, at Trump Tower in December.
