The Los Angeles pride parade was renamed the ResistMarch, and tens of thousands turned out in Hollywood, some carrying rainbow flags or signs reading "Love Trumps Hate".

This year, the theme of Saturday's parade and Sunday's festival is "Unapologetically Proud".

The march featured a rally in West Hollywood, where House minority leader Nancy Pelosi and Representatives Maxine Waters and Adam Schiff took to the stage, Trump's Walk of Fame star was covered in stickers, and people held up banners celebrating Pride, alongside those criticizing the president.

"We are all here as those who are willing to get in the streets for our community", she said. "We deserve to be treated like people, all of us, no matter what our differences are".

She said "we're going to take our country back from him", and told the marchers that they have the strength, the courage and the power to do it.

Capital Pride and the march aren't officially affiliated, but they support each other and have worked together so that participants in one can join the other.

The decision to shift the event's emphasis drew criticism from some in Southern California's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and "queer" community, who say the one day of the year set aside to celebrate their LGBTQ identities should not be given over to other political causes.

Gay pride festivals are taking place this weekend in dozens of cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Athens, Sydney and Rome.

Macias, the Los Angeles march spokesman, said the complaints about this year's Resist March were due largely to a misunderstanding about its intentions and that the weekend still would feature gay pride festivities across the Los Angeles area.

The events had various names, including the Equality March in Washington, D.C., and the Resist March in Los Angeles.

"Capital Pride has consistently demonstrated that it is more interested in accommodating the interests of Metropolitan police and of corporate sponsors than it is in supporting the very communities it supposedly represents", the group said in a statement seen by the LA Times.

The march aims to address the current political climate and voice concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, organizers say.

"There are a wide range of health issues, environmental issues, social issues that impact not just the LGBTQ community, but the whole community".

They also point out that Trump broke an Obama tradition by not declaring June Gay Pride Month.

The Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, is set to open its doors early Monday in remembrance of victims of the mass shooting there on June 12, 2016, that left 49 people dead.

In San Francisco, pride organizers have not dropped their parade in favor of a protest but the SF Weekly newspaper reported that the event would include a "resistance contingent" and an immigrant rights speaker.
