United announced last weekend that they had agreed a fee, which Press Association Sport understands to be 35million euros (£30.75million), with the Portuguese club to sign Lindelof and all that remains is for the centre-back to undergo a medical and agree personal terms.

United are also expected to get a deal over the line for Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata in the coming days.

A central defender by trade, Lindelof rolled into United's training ground Carrington driving a Chevrolet, the club's shirt sponsor, and if he successfully completes his examination will become Jose Mourinho's first major acquisition of the summer as he looks to fight on four fronts next season.

"Our season a year ago showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer".

Despite his young age, Lindelof already has Champions League experience and tasted domestic glory with Benfica after capturing Primeira Liga titles in each of the last two seasons, as well as three domestic cups since first moving to Portugal in 2012.

Lindelof's arrival raises serious questions about the futures of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones though, as Mourinho has too many options at the back and it's felt that he'll have to offload one.

United do not only require a new centre-back.
