The assailant, who had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP, fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died. Scalise was hit, and crawled out of the infield, leaving a trail of blood, colleagues said.

Mr Scalise the number three House Republican leader, was first elected in 2008. Bernie Sanders, was shot and mortally wounded by police before being taken into custody. He died after being taken into custody.

The actions of a lone gunman at an Arlington, Virginia baseball field prompted a rare thing on Capitol Hill - unity - at least for a day.

The House has returned to business after a gunman fired at a baseball practice, critically injuring a top Republican lawmaker and wounding several others. Investigators are still studying James T. Hodgkinson's social media profile and activities leading up to the attack.

Hodgkinson was also a one-time volunteer for Bernie Sanders' campaign for president a year ago.

The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer and camera from Hodgkinson's white van and is examining them for evidence, the statement said. The day before the shooting, Hodgkinson allegedly called his wife to tell her he missed her and their dogs and was coming home, his brother claimed.

"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time." the Medstar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that Scalise has "improved in the last 24 hours".

The annual Democrats versus Republicans baseball game will go on as planned this evening at National's Park in Washington D.C. The White House said President Trump would like to attend the baseball game today but he won't be able to because there's not enough time to follow secret service protocols. Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika underwent surgery but is still believed to be in critical condition.

Government establishes gun amnesty amid terror concerns
The Port Arthur shooting in April 1996 resulted in the deaths of 35 people at the popular tourist site in Tasmania. According to reports the government believes there are more than 260,000 illegal guns in the community.

Additionally, two individuals - Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, and a Capitol Police officer - sustained minor secondary injuries.

In the aftermath of the shooting, lawmakers spoke of unity and bipartisanship and "family".

There were about 20 congressmen on the field at the time of the attack. But it's a tentative spirit of bipartisanship, and some cracks are beginning to show.

Speaking on the House floor, Representative Glenn Thompson issued a call to "replace the hateful rhetoric and resistance with respect".

The members of Congress sheltering in the dugout helped a tourniquet onto Barth's leg, then stayed in the dugout for cover.

Players on both Congressional baseball teams will be wearing gold caps Thursday night to honor Rep. Steve Scalise thanks to Louisiana State University, which overnighted about 70 hats and two dozen T-shirts to Washington.

It is one of the most anticipated events of summer at the Capitol, with Democrats and Republicans splitting the 79 games that have been played over the years 39-39, with one tie.
