Pruitt traveled to Italy alongside six top environment officials from the other G7 countries and participated in the opening session about climate action on Sunday before heading back to the United States for a cabinet meeting several hours later.

The final version stated that the US will continue to engage with "key worldwide partners" in a way consistent with its domestic priorities - a "strong" economy and a "healthy environment".

The Trump administration refused to join a G7 communique released Monday that endorsed the goals of the Paris agreement on climate change.

But earlier this month U.S. President Donald Trump said he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, drawing condemnation from other world leaders.

Trump announced the US withdrawal on June 1, and the leaders of France, Germany and Italy immediately released a statement expressing their regret over the USA decision.

A two-day environmental summit of the Group of Seven (G7) nations plus the European Union and four invited countries kicked off in the Italian city of Bologna on Sunday.

Since the Trump announcement on June 1, many states, including California and NY, and large numbers of USA cities have said they intend to continue to enact policies aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

The magazine portrayed Trudeau's position as a key factor that would make it hard for other countries to pressure the U.S.to do more on climate change.

Presenting the report, Italy's environment minister, Gian Luca Galletti, called the Paris accord "irreversible, non-negotiable and the only instrument possible to combat climate change".

"We are resetting the dialogue to say Paris is not the only way forward", Pruitt said in a statement.

Iowa City and Johnson County have united with other local governments nationwide to continue climate-change action.

Trump cited the negative impact of the treaty on the USA auto industry, among many others.

As a result, the US said it would not join those sections of the communique on climate and multilateral development banks.

She said Canada remains "deeply disappointed" in the USA move to abandon the accord, and that it was "very sad" to see the Americans reduced "to a footnote on climate actions".

German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks said all seven countries had agreed on the need to take action but disappointment had been expressed at the US decision to leave the Paris Accord.

At their June 8 meeting, the supervisors unanimously passed a resolution committing to the principles of the Paris Accord in spite of Trump's announcement.

In addition to the energy-related problems created by the Paris climate accord, there are numerous other ways in which it would create problems for people in the Plains states.
