"He is more responsive, and is speaking with loved ones", said the tweet sent from Scalise's account.
Scalise, the number three House Republican, was shot along with three other people early on Wednesday when a lone gunman, angry about President Donald Trump, attacked a group of Republican lawmakers as they practised for a congressional charity baseball game. Doctors said his prognosis was positive on Friday.
Sava said the congressman remains sedated but was able to "respond to family members" and physicians.
The surgeon said there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Mr Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".
Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation".
Scalise was shot in the hip, and sustained grievous injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.
British PM May to meet Sinn Fein Northern Ireland leader on Thursday
Meanwhile, a deadly fire at a tower block in London could delay the announcement of any deal to stay in power, the BBC reported. Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein said the prospect of a British agreement with the DUP was causing anxiety and fear.
Trump's comments came at the beginning of his speech in Miami Friday announcing a partial rollback of ties to Cuba - reversing changes made by President Barack Obama's administration.
Sue Hodgkinson told reporters outside her IL home Thursday that she was busy with her job and didn't know a lot about what her husband, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, did between January and March. They also said "we continue to be grateful beyond words for the heroic actions of the U.S. Capitol Police this week".
Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died. Predicting the length of that hospital stay will be much easier after a few more days have passed.
Democrat Cedric Richmond, a fellow Louisiana congressman, said as many others did that Scalise is a fighter. "I have never said 'life sucks, ' only the policies of the Republicans", he wrote in another.
