Whole Foods shares rose as much as 2.2 percent on Monday - suggesting hopes the company might fetch a higher price - and were still up 1.3 percent at $43.25 in afternoon trading.

The 35-year-old Army aviator, who's stationed at nearby Hunter Army Airfield, said for non-persishable items - and for other products when she's busy - she relies on the mobile app Shipt, which for $100 per year allows her to schedule home delivery of groceries from the local Publix. The more touch points you have with a consumer, the more you'll be able to sell them everything else.
Aaron Turner, a Los Angeles-based analyst who covers Grubhub for Wedbush Securities, wrote in a note to clients Monday that the tech giant's plans to buy Whole Foods for almost $14 billion set it up for a larger food ordering and delivery play. Amazon clearly wants to do to supermarkets what it did to bookstores.
Amazon has recently obtained a patent to a technology that bars shoppers in its physical stores including Whole Foods to compare prices on their smartphones. How that experiment has panned out so far we don't know for sure. There'll be a Whole Foods dream merging in with an Amazon dream. Some Whole Foods fans may oppose the move as they would rather buy produce from a brick and mortar location than a website.
This is of huge value to Bezos and co.
Amazon have already demonstrated that they are looking to change this, introducing their prototype grocery store "Amazon Go", where there are no cashiers.

Walmart is the nation's largest seller of groceries with category sales of $170 billion previous year, and retail giant has found that the category is key to driving store visits and customer loyalty. And we're only talking about groceries, that brings us to the next point. "This would give them a very premium brand that has a lot of credibility with customers, and puts them right in the middle of the grocery industry in one fell swoop". Short term, Amazon is trying to get a stronger foothold in the grocery business but what happens after that is still anyone's guess.
Now that the companies have announced their tie-up, Mackey went on to say he is completely over the moon about Amazon.
When asked about how benefits and compensation would synch up for Amazon and Whole Foods employees, Mackey joked that everyone would get free Amazon Echos.
