Tourist Boat With More Than 150 People On Board Sinks In Colombia

There was an emergency situation in Columbia today after a recreational tour boat sank with about 150 people on board.

"At the moment, we can confirm the deaths of three people and that there are approximately 30 more missing", National Police Director Gen. Jorge Hernando Nieto told the El Colombiano newspaper.

Three people have died and 30 are still missing in a reservoir near the city of Medellin.

Video circulating on social media shows the ship going down and dozens of other vessels approaching it to try to rescue people. Another 24 were being treated for injuries at a local hospital.

The Guatapé reservoir surrounding the outcrop of El Penol is one a popular weekend destinations located a little more than an hour from Medellin.

It's unclear what caused the boat to sink but survivors told local media that it appeared to be overloaded and none of the passengers on board were wearing life vests. "It all happened in a few minutes", said a fire service captain involved in the rescue effort, Luis Bernardo Morales.

The air force said a helicopter was on its way to help in rescue operations.
