Vice President Hamid Ansari's term ends on August 10

The Election Commission on Tuesday issued notification for the vice presidential election, setting in motion the process for filing nominations.

None of the parties has nominated any candidate till now for the polls.

The Congress leaders had indicated on Monday that major opposition parties may field a candidate in the vice presidential election too. The last date for withdrawal of nomination is July 21.

"The Commission vide separate Notification issued on the 1st of July, 2017 has appointed Shri Shumsher K. Sheriff, Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2017 and Shri Mukul Pande, Additional Secretary and Shri Rohtas, Joint Secretary, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, as the Assistant Returning Officers", the EC said in a statement.

Election for India's next Vice President will be held on August 5 and the counting of votes will take place the same day.

Hamid Ansari has been the Vice President and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since August 11, 2007.

Independent MPs in the Rajya Sabha and most of the nominated ones in both Houses have reached out to BJP leaders expressing support in both the presidential and vice-presidential elections. His present term ends on August 10.

A nomination paper has to be backed by at least 20 electors as proposers and at least 20 electors as seconders.

Sources in the BJP say the NDA has the support of almost 70 per cent of the electoral college for the post of vice-president, which includes MPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated ones. Find us on Facebook too!
