A New Hampshire state representative faces charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl last year, state officials announced Friday, Boston25News reported.

Rockingham County Attorney Patricia Conway announced Friday that Republican Rep. Eric Schleien, 29 of Hudson, is charged with one misdemeanor count of sexual assault and two misdemeanor counts of simple assault.

Portsmouth police investigated the incident, which investigators said happened in July 2016. "The fact that the accusations against Rep. Schleien involve a 16 year old girl is very disturbing, to say the least".

He emphasized that "we need not to rush judgement until the investigation is concluded and Rep. Schleien has had his day in court".

"Obviously if the charges are proven true, I would expect the representative from Hudson to resign from the House immediately", Jasper said, according to CBS in Boston.

An arraignment date has not been set, authorities said.

Schleien, a Republican, is in his second term in the state Legislature, representing Hudson and Pelham. He could not immediately be reached for comment Friday morning.
