Nemanja Matic would "fit the bill" for Manchester United if the Red Devils can sign the defensive midfielder from Chelsea, according to Gary Neville.

Chelsea fans have been left sweating after Tiemoue Bakayoko hinted he's signing for Manchester United instead.

Bakayoko has been linked all summer with Chelsea following his impressive year with Monaco last season when they won the Ligue 1 and got to the semi-final of the Champions League.

The France worldwide has been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea this summer, but the former have set sights on other targets including Nemanja Matic.

It is claimed Matic has always been a first choice target for midfield for the Italian champions.

The Blues missed out on securing the services of their former striker Romelu Lukaku last week as the powerful frontman signed for rivals Manchester United in a deal worth £75 million.

The 22-year-old has been a target for the Blues all summer but the deal stalled as he spent time recovering from minor knee surgery at the end of the last term.

Only two Republican senators could oppose the plan, as Vice President Mike Pence could make a tie-breaking vote if needed. Susan Collins of ME and Kentucky's Rand Paul have said they'll vote "no," leaving McConnell no wiggle room.

A couple of weeks ago it seemed as if a Matic move was only a matter of formalities.

Matic joined Chelsea from Benfica back in 2014 and has made over 100 appearances for the club since moving to England.

There had been speculation Manchester United might try and stymie the bid for Bakayoko - who made his senior worldwide debut earlier this year - just as they did with Lukaku, as they broke the record for a deal between British clubs of £75m to prise him away from Everton on Monday.

It comes after Bakayoko sent Chelsea fans into a panic with a Twitter post on Friday morning.

Midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah this week joined Watford, following Bournemouth pair Asmir Begovic and Nathan Ake out of Stamford Bridge.
