Cubs acquire Jose Quintana from White Sox for top prospects

Hey there, Chicago. That was fun.

Yes, that's correct. The two cross-town rivals made a major deal with each other, which is rare enough as it is.

Jose Quintana didn't have to travel far when he was traded from the Chicago White Sox to the Cubs.

The White Sox also signed prized Cuban prospect Luis Robert to a minor league deal in May.

The Cubs' "core" includes players such as Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Kyle Schwarber and Ian Happ.

They were in a bit of a predicament.

They were both excellent in 2016; they've both had a bumpy 2017 at times. Their production has just taken a hit.

Chicago is 2-4 in its last six games.

It's easy to make changes when injuries knock a guy out of the rotation long-term, or if a less-than-established youngster/journeyman has a couple of rough outings.

Last week I wrote about how the Crew and the Oakland Athletics would be flawless trade partners. You don't just dump those pieces out of a rotation easily.

The big loser in this deal will be Mike Montgomery in the short term and Eddie Butler in the long term.

With this big trade out of the way, the Cubs front office can focus on addressing remaining needs while not waiting three additional weeks to make a much-needed upgrade to the starting rotation.

In Interleague play, Quintana has gone 6-9 in 21 starts with 3.30 ERA over 133.2 innings with 123/30 K/BB ratio.

It was undoubtedly a hefty price to pay, but Quintana is a ideal fit for this team.

"The motivation is that you want to win and win for your team", said Arrieta, who finished the first half with an 8-7 record and 4.35 ERA.

Bolstering Epstein's point is that Quintana is under club control through the 2020 season.

After dominating the National League last season on the way to a World Series title, the Cubs enter the second half this season at 43-45 and 5.5 games behind Milwaukee in the Central Division. Going into the All-Star break below.500 in a awful division despite relatively good team health, THAT created the urgency.

Something else to keep in mind. Hahn said it was hard to part ways with Quintana, who emerged as a quiet leader in recent seasons and inherited the role of team ace after left-hander Chris Sale was shipped to the Boston Red Sox. They have plenty of work to do to get their own operation back on a winning track.

In giving up Jimenez and Cease, the Cubs paid dearly, just as they did a year ago when they sent prospect Gleyber Torres to the Yankees to get closer Aroldis Chapman.

With Quintana's belongings obviously not cleaned out yet, Holland also joked that he's going to offer up all of his clothes (and a bottle of lotion) in a yard sale, that would probably fetch them a pretty penny.
