The Daily Express reports that Arsenal are plotting a £45m swoop for Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk as they eye glory next season, with the Dutch defender adding to their already impressive defensive ranks.
The 26-year-old Netherlands global central defender, who is now working his way back to full fitness after suffering a season-ending foot injury against Leicester in January, has been heavily linked with a move away from St Mary's this summer.
Nacho Monreal has played centrally and impressed but may be required on the left if Kieran Gibbs leaves, whilst Per Mertesacker remains an option but is confirmed to be retiring at the end of the current season- and Van Dijk would be a top-class successor.
UAE wants worldwide monitoring of Qatar
Arab nations including Saudi Arabia and Egypt cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting extremism, in the biggest diplomatic crisis to hit the region in years.
The 26-year-old seemed to be close to a move to Anfield last month but the move fell through after Southampton reported Liverpool to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.
Van Dijk would undoubtedly address that and help fix the issue, and if he is adamant about a move to Liverpool this summer, then it's hard not to see it eventually happen.
Van Dijk has reportedly said Liverpool are the only club he will move to and is prepared to put in a transfer request to make sure the deal is done.
