5 eminent doctors selected for NEW MCI oversight committee, Check out Details

Centre appoints 5 docs on Oversight Committee to keep MCI in check

The doctors who will be part of the new panel are: Dr VK Paul, Dr Nikhil Tandon, Dr Jagat Ram, Dr BN Gandharan and Dr Randeep Guleria. The panel is to be notified on Tuesday itself.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar said there must be an alternative mechanism to deal with the problems of medical colleges, which will be a substitute of the oversight committee.

The Centre appointed five eminent doctors in the oversight committee which would replace a Supreme Court-appointed panel led by former Chief Justice RM Lodha to supervise the functioning of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

"The doctors proposed are all outstanding people".

Dispelling the misgivings of the bench, Ranjit Kumar said: "We have taken their consent". The court said the committee will "have the authority to oversee the functioning of MCI, all decisions/recommendations of the MCI will require approval of the oversight committee before they are communicated to the Central Government, will be free to issue appropriate remedial directions for improvement in the functioning of MCI and will function till the Central Government puts in place any other appropriate mechanism..."

The names were suggested by the Centre and approved by the apex court.

The court had on May 2 last year set up the committee to function for a period of one year or till a suitable mechanism was brought in by the government in its place. They are very busy doctors and find it hard to spare time outside their work.

Accepting the names proposed by the Centre, the bench in its order asked the government to "nominate one of the members of the reconstituted Oversight Committee, as its Chairperson".

The court was dealing with the question whether the Supreme Court-appointed three-member oversight committee will continue to look after the affairs of MCI.
