Arsenal players suffered food poisoning before Bayern game - Wenger

Emiliano Martinez saved from David Alaba and Juan Bernat, while Renato Sanches hit the bar, with only Mohamed Elneny fluffing his lines for the Gunners.

Coach of Arsenal FC Arsene Wenger looks on during the 2017 International Champions Cup football match between FC Bayern and Arsenal FC at Shanghai Stadium on July 19, 2017 in Shanghai, China. With key players missing matches, Wenger admitted that it isn't "ideal physical preparation" for the season ahead.

The game nearly looked as if it was going to level out, as Özil unlocked Bayern's defence with a trademark through ball to Alexandre Lacazette.

Still, Bayern were much the stronger side and in the minutes before the break should have extended their lead through Rodriguez and Thomas Muller, although they each saw shots stopped by Cech. Mohamed Elneny played the third match in a row for Arsenal as a centre-back, this time for the full 90 minutes, as manager Arsene Wenger continues to test the Egypt worldwide in a new role this preseason.

At the other end Arsenal only managed to test veteran Tom Starke twice through Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette, with the save from the latter particularly impressive as he got down well to his left.

There is the underlying fear of German masterclasses in penalty shoot outs against English opposition, however Emi Martinez put such fears to bed.

"And for the players I've said the players are of other teams so I can not say too much".

Wenger added that Arsenal, who will face Chelsea in Beijing on Saturday, did not know what caused the food poisoning. I was a bit scared about (the team's form) tonight in the first half.

Granit Xhaka's last-ditch tackle denied James on the stroke of half-time and he was once again frustrated by Cech early in the second half after Lewandowski allowed Kingsley Coman's cross to run through.

Bayern, meanwhile, plays AC Milan in Shenzhen.
