Monday's trade deadline is getting closer, and so are the A's and Yankees in talks on a Gray-to-the-Bronx deal that would move the 5-foot-10 pitcher from last place to the pennant race. As one exec told me then, there is a difference "between where they value him and what he is".

NY sent minor league pitchers Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns to the Twins for Garcia, a 31-year-old left-hander who went 4-7 with a 4.30 ERA in 18 starts for Atlanta. That they were able to make such deals without parting with their two or three best prospects is gravy.

Garcia, a lefthander and former Cardinal, is to make his Yankees debut Thursday, in Cleveland.

"It's what we need".

Instead of an inhibitor, Beane saw the injuries as an opportunity to add the best quality players with a future further than one year in mind, saying the move was made to improve the team in the long-term. That's one reason they felt secure in dealing Gray, who is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA in 16 starts. In a short-series, the Yankees can now trot out a trio of Luis Severino, Sonny Gray, and Masahiro Tanaka, with able-bodied CC Sabathia also capable of pitching a strong game.

With important weekend games on the schedule this is the latest round of trade rumors for the three pitchers.

Oakland, which won its second straight after a six-game skid, came in tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the major league lead with eight game-ending hits.

Brian Cashman wasn't kidding on Monday when he said, "we've done everything we possibly can to continue to excel". But now with Minnesota deciding to sell off, Garcia will head to NY and pitch in a pennant race.

Did the Yankees overpay?

But, even at the expense of three prospects, this is not a move made strictly for the now for NY, as the 27-year-old Gray is under team control through the 2019 season.

"Basically a three-pitch guy: fastball, changeup, slider". The Yankees are a really good team right now. He has been a bit inconsistent in 2017, but he has allowed just six earned runs in his last 39.1 innings. More acquisitions could jeopardize his rotation spot.

This would assure that any team acquiring Gray would get him for an extra start. After all, there is the old saying of "you can never have enough pitching".

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday a day after lasting 3 1/3 innings, and left-hander Chasen Shreve was recalled from the Triple-A club. An 11th-round pick of the Mariners in 2013, Littell was dealt to the Yankees last November for lefty reliever James Pazos. He went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk on Sunday. A 3.86 ERA nearly two-thirds of the way through the season, it's been one of the key reasons why the Bombers have been a surprising postseason contender.

"It's just that part of the season".

The Twins just got Jaime Garcia, but they're now under.500 and their chances of making the playoffs are slim. "You're not going to feel 100 percent or be on you're "A" game 100 percent of the time".

Oakland trailed 5-3 in the eighth when Matt Chapman's two-run double tied the game.

Cotton (thumb blister) will be activated from the disabled list Sunday.

In the meantime, though, the jury remains out, and it's up to Gray now to prove that he is what the Yankees believe he is by executing on the field, against either the Tigers or the Indians, depending on whether Girardi chooses to hold him back.
