Documented gang member arrested in shooting of 12-year-old Victorville girl

The suspect, identified as Anthony Pitts, 26, was arrested Thursday night at his mother's Redlands home in the shooting that left Makiya Walls dead in the 17000 block of Monaco Drive in Victorville, said San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon.

- Authorities say a suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Makiya Walls in Victorville.

Instead, investigators learned that there was an ongoing feud between Makiya's mother, Pitts and the other women, the sheriff said. "Earlier in the day, there was a confrontation between members of both families".

Investigators declined to release details about the dispute. But Gaffney said Makiya's family helped investigators piece together clues that led to Thursday's arrests.

Makiya was inside her two-story home just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when Pitts, a gang member, walked up and fired several rounds, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Neighbors told reporters they heard multiple gunshots. "Unfortunately in situations like this, emotions run high, and the mother of Makiya, obviously shaken by this event, but she was involved in some activity that amounted to credible terrorist threats against the suspect and the suspect's associates", McMahon said. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died.

She was taken into custody Thursday night on a warrant regarding those threats, McMahon said.
