Sheriff Herzet said Mitchell would be booked into the Butler County jail for aggravated escape from custody. He then ran into a corn field where he has been hiding for most of the day near Douglass High School.

53-year old Mitchell is an inmate at the Winfield Correctional Facility, where he is serving time for burglary, theft and indecent liberties.

Douglass School District was on lockdown throughout the day while the search was underway.

Butler County, Andover, and Augusta worked with the U.S. Marshall's service on the search. Herzet said a lot of manpower was needed because of earlier statements made by Mitchell that he wouldn't be taken alive. He was last seen at 9:30 Tuesday evening. He was last seen wearing a white state-issued T-shirt, and either blue jeans or gray sweatpants. He also was possibly wearing a red-hooded sweatshirt. His record also includes a child sex crime conviction.
