Rams see Sammy Watkins as difference-maker at receiver

The Bills announced Friday that they completed a trade with the Los Angeles Rams that will send wide receiver Sammy Watkins and a 2016 sixth round pick for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second round pick. He was drafted by Philadelphia 42nd overall in the second round of the 2014 draft.

In the other trade, the Bills are acquiring WR Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for CB Ronald Darby.

Woods said Watkins is "a big, big, big-time receiver", while the gregarious Robey-Coleman sees him as the kind of difference-maker the Rams have lacked since the heyday of "The Greatest Show on Turf" when they were located in St. Louis. The 24-year-old missed eight games last year after breaking a bone in his foot, but his yards per reception rate over his three NFL seasons is the fourth-best in the league, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

The former Clemson standout has 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns in three National Football League seasons despite undergoing multiple foot surgeries.

The Sammy Watkins trade wasn't all the Buffalo Bills had in store for their roster, though. Taylor took a $10 million pay cut during the offseason to remain with the Bills, but his future with the team remains in doubt.

It appears that the Bills are building for the future, as they now hold the Chiefs' 2018 first-round pick, the Rams' 2018 second-round pick, and the Eagles 2018 third-round pick.

The 2017 season will be the Bills' first under first-year general manager Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott. His time in Buffalo was plagued with injuries where he played 37 games in 3 seasons, and only 8 in 2016. "And I think we'll have that this year". He won't be able to open up the field, but now he has two dependable veteran targets and a good rookie coming to work with.

Getting Darby is a victory for the Eagles considering the revolving door at the position and the current state of the depth chart.

And as the Rams sought refuge in their Coliseum locker room New Year's Day, they knew they had to address the folly of Fisher's approach in order to ensure Goff had a viable, available path to reach his ceiling.

Robert Woods, who spent the last three seasons playing opposite Watkins in Buffalo, signed in LA earlier in the offseason. A recent report suggested some team employees believe Matthews could have practiced more but allowed his contract status to influence his decision-making, a charge that the Matthews strongly denied. So we have been taking a look at all 32 clubs (in original 2017 draft order) and doing a little analysis.
