North Korea has announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers, a move that if carried out would be its most provocative missile launch to date.
North Korean state media reported on Thursday plans for the strike would be ready by mid-August and will await the orders of the "commander-in-chief of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) nuclear force", understood to be Kim Jong Un.
"To be honest, I'm more anxious about the projectiles from the typhoons when we get strong winds than whatever projectiles Kim Jong Un says he will launch on Guam", Janice Furukawa, a 58-year-old mother, said as she prepared her typhoon emergency kit at her home in the western village of Piti. But it wasn't known until now that the contacts have continued, or that they have broached matters other than USA detainees.
Along with the USA personnel on the island, there are about 7,100 of their family members as well as 6,700 civilian Defense Department workers and their dependents, according to Logan.
Japan and South Korea vowed a strong reaction if the North were to go through with the plan.
In 2013, the Army sent a missile defense system to Guam called Terminal High Altitude Area Defense or THAAD. She declined to say whether Germany would stand with the U.S.in case of a military conflict with North Korea and called on the U.N. Security Council to continue to address the issue.

Irving, if he wants to be the man on the team, needs to prove that he can be better than that. It's one thing to say people go through ups and downs during the regular season.
Guam was claimed by Spain in 1565 and became a USA territory in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Residents do not pay USA income taxes or vote in the general election for US president.
About 40 percent of Guam's residents are Chamorros, the name for the native people.
Air Force B-1B Lancer Bombers arrived on the island of Guam Friday morning.
The official languages of Guam are English and Chamorro, which means 'noble.' It's a Malayo-Polynesian language that has incorporated Spanish words over time. It has seen various popular movements pushing for greater self-government or even US statehood, most notably a significant but failed effort in the 1980s to make it a commonwealth on par with Puerto Rico. The Navy and Air Force fall under Joint Region Marianas command. Spain's colonial rule continued until the US took control in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.
Any attack against Guam would be considered an existential threat to Japan, the defense minister said, also citing a mutual defense agreement with the United States. It has two 2-mile (3-kilometer) long runways and large fuel and munitions storage facilities.
Spain ceded Guam to the U.S.in 1898, but the Japanese seized the island in 1941.
