Yankees put Masahiro Tanaka on 10-day DL

Masahiro Tanaka's rough season hit another low point on Saturday as the Yankees' right-hander was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, the team announced. "I don't think it will be too long".

The Yankees recalled right-hander Giovanny Gallegos to replace him.

A day earlier, the playoff-contending Yankees put starter CC Sabathia on the DL because of inflammation in his right knee.

Former Senators GM Bryan Murray dies at 74
In 2007, Murray was named general manager of the Senators after spending the first year as head coach. Murray coached the Senators to the Stanley Cup Final in 2007; they lost to the Ducks in five games.

"We decided he needs a break", Girardi said. In his most recent start, Tanaka had allowed a leadoff home run to Jose Bautista and then a walk to Josh Donaldson, giving him a career-high five walks and prompting Girardi to remove him from the game. Rather, Tanaka was feeling more worn out.

Tanaka has struggled this season, going 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 23 starts. Tanaka threw 88 pitches in the brief outing. Tanaka won't throw at all over the next five days and will miss a couple starts while he rests his exhausted pitching arm, putting him in line to return sometime when the Yankees face the Tigers between August 22 and August 24.

Girardi said that Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa are the likely candidates to take Tanaka's next turn Monday against the Mets.
