"So big congratulations to all people working with City, we are a strong Club".

The Portuguese midfielder emerged as one of European football's most sought-after players last season during Monaco's march to the French league title and semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Chilean is still locked in a contract standoff with the Gunners and could well leave the club in the summer or winter.

After a tough introduction to the English game last season, Pep Guardiola will be hoping to turn the fortunes of his side around when the new campaign kicks off.

"Hopefully next season I will be here and we will not spend how we spent this season", Guardiola told reporters ahead of City's Premier League opener at Brighton on Saturday.

While some fear the spending is unsustainable and will put clubs' long-term stability at risk, the 25th year of the Premier League era should deliver a title race more fiercely contested than ever. The breakthrough finally arrived with 20 minutes to play. "We tried to improve, to attack more fluently, a little bit quicker, a little more precise, a little more accuracy in our passes". On paper, the Seagulls are one of the weakest teams in the division, and manager Chris Hughton is going to have a mammoth task in trying to avoid immediate relegation. The new players that come in they have to adjust to the way we want to play.

"I am so grateful to my physios to control the amount of work". We try to make a good build-up, try to do high pressing, monopolise the ball, move the team through the ball, attack outside and inside.

"We were still very much in the game and had really limited them to a few chances".

"I'm so satisfied with what we have done, but of course we can get better".

In the end they were undone by their own mistakes, with Dale Stephens caught in possession in the lead-up to Aguero's goal and Dunk's own goal sealing their fate in a game City should have won more comfortably given their 75 percent possession.

Pep Guardiola: "Last season at my first press conference we were favorites, so nothing has changed".

Whilst arguably other teams have "as good" starting XI's, it is very hard to argue that any other team has as much strength in depth as City all over the pitch.

"We have to do that under pressure".

"Congratulations to the team for the first victory". "Maybe he'll get minutes in Girona".

"We know better, I know better and they know me better. We had one of oldest teams in Europe + not bought a full-back for years".

This is a player who is given far less credit than he deserves in terms of his work-rate, assists, energy, trackback-ability and risky pin-point crossing to mention but a few.
