"Two U.S. service members were killed and five injured conducting combat operations in northern Iraq, Aug. 13, 2017", the U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on its website.

Two Americans were killed and five others wounded Sunday while conducting combat operations in northern Iraq, the US military said.

Another five US military personnel were injured in the incident, OIR said; according to initial reports, the incident "was not due to enemy contact". It did not identify the soldiers.

"The entire counter-ISIS Coalition sends our deepest condolences to these heroes' families, friends and teammates", said Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force carrying out Operation Inherent Resolve, as the US-led coalition is known.

The U.S. military announcement came as thousands of U.S. troops are participating in the war against the IS group in Iraq. "There are no words to describe the respect I have for you and sorrow I have for your loss". The vast majority operate within heavily guarded bases, collecting and sharing intelligence with Iraqi forces and providing logistical support.
