Pep Guardiola: Man City need to improve attacking to have title hopes

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud

"We saw what happened with Liverpool and Watford, with Chelsea - that's the Premier League". It was always going to be hard for us to score. They were organised and you could see they had a clear game plan, but we've got quality and eventually it made the difference.

"They still have their older guard, and from among them it was Sergio Aguero who scored the first, with just 20 minutes left and City gradually grinding down the resistance of a Brighton team that could not quite avoid errors that are so costly against teams as good as this". We try to make a good build-up, try to do high pressing, monopolise the ball, move the team through the ball, attack outside and inside. "It is better to play with a smile on your face". "That is the top (and only) priority, and the club will do all it can to achieve that".

"We did it earlier, so we were lucky because now it would be so much more expensive with what has happened in the last weeks".

"I was confident then too". Every game is a battle, especially with the teams who arrive in the first four, five or six games - they are so complicated, especially away.

"Ultimately [we have] a lot of positive things to take from this game and we kind of built on the pre-season we had".

Newcastle United 'step up Jack Wilshere pursuit'
Wilshere looks increasingly likely to leave Arsenal after being omitted from the squad that helped the Gunners beat Leicester 4-3 on Friday.

"If you want to play in a certain way that I like, to monopolise the ball, you need talent and we've got it".

"Anthony Knockaert seems to be one of Brighton's better players".

Manchester City's midfielders must accept rotation this season as Pep Guardiola picks through an enviable raft of alternatives in central areas. The group of players are going to stay here for a long time. I am backing him to deliver this time around, though.

Guardiola has strengthened his defence this summer, bringing in three younger full-backs in Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo, and a new goalkeeper in Ederson - as well as signing midfielder Bernardo Silva.

"He has the quality to help us a lot in the small spaces and he has the quality to attack central defenders one-against-one, creating chances for the other ones".
