Emmerich was president of production at New Line when the studio released its "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy in the 2000s. "Annabelle: Creation" scored the highest industry opening weekend of all time for a horror film in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary. As we noted in the global box office report this weekend, the R-rated Annabelle: Creation surpassed the overseas openings of both The Conjuring in 2013 and spinoff Annabelle in 2014.
Thanks to big ticket sales for Annabelle: Creation, the films in The Conjuring Universe have crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It now ranks #1 in ten of the 11 markets that opened yesterday, including Mexico, Brazil and UAE, and is already dominating those markets, with Mexico and three other Latin American markets, as well as UAE, showing the highest opening days ever for a horror film in those territories based on the Thursday box office alone.
Individually, several of the films that make up this New Line horror-verse are among the genre's top all-time earners at the box office, with The Conjuring 2 ($320.3M) and The Conjuring ($319.4M) coming in second and third, respectively, after The Exorcist, and Annabelle ($257M) at No. 8.

In Annabelle: Creation, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker's possessed creation, Annabelle. Released in 2013, The Conjuring kicked off director James Wan's movie series, as it told the true-life tale of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), who for the bulk of the film concentrated on the mystery behind the supernatural hauntings at a Rhode Island farmhouse.
