Palace insists no mention of human rights topic in Duterte-Trump meet

Following Trump's interactions with Putin on his trip, coverage has largely ignored substantive areas of bilateral cooperation between Russian Federation and the U.S., focusing instead on Trump's comments that Putin "means it" when he assured he did not meddle in the United States election.

In the lead up to Trump's visit to Asia, US press coverage devoted a great deal of attention to speculation as to whether Trump would meet with Putin at all, as an investigation into possible collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and Russian Federation continues.

But Trump, who has been criticised at home for neglecting rights issues in dealings overseas, praised Duterte in May for doing an "unbelievable job on the drug problem".

Trump also visited Japan, South Korea and China. He met with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and highlighted their two nations' "deeper and more comprehensive" ties, looking to strengthen a relationship that is vital to the USA vision of an Indo-Pacific region that attempts to de-emphasize China's influence.

A statement from the White House released Monday regarding the joint remarks said that Mr. Trump and Duterte "underscored that human rights and the dignity of human life are essential, and agreed to continue mainstreaming the human rights agenda in their national programs to promote the welfare of all sectors, including the most vulnerable groups".
